6 Ways to Get Rid of Mosquito Breeding Habitats

One of the best ways to get rid of mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding grounds. You might not know it, but there are a number of areas in your yard that can serve as potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Part of our job as mosquito control specialists is to identify these potential breeding sites and eliminate them, giving you the mosquito-free space you deserve.

Here are some ways that you can get rid of mosquito breeding grounds around your yard and home and stop these pests from ruining your outdoor fun:

Dump Out Any Standing Water Around Your Yard and Home

Mosquitoes love standing water because they need it to lay and hatch their eggs. In fact, they only need about a quarter of an inch of water to lay their eggs in.

This is why getting rid of any stagnant water in your yard is one of the best ways to get rid of mosquitoes. In order to make sure there is no standing water lying around, dump out water that has collected in items around your yard.

Here are some common items that collect standing water:

      • Tire swings
      • Children’s toys left out in the yard
      • Trash can lids
      • Wheelbarrows
      • Kiddie pools

Clean Up Any Litter In Your Yard

Even the smallest items of trash, such as bottle caps and cans, can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If you are having a backyard barbecue, enjoying dinner on the patio, or just playing with your kids outside, make sure that no trash is left behind in your outdoor space.

Regularly Check Your Gutters For Clogging

Gutters can be another hotspot for mosquito breeding. If leaves gather in your gutters and clog the drainage system, that will likely result in a buildup of stagnant water. To make sure this does not happen, clean your gutters often and keep an eye out for leaf litter.

Change Out The Water In Your Birdbath

If you have a birdbath in your yard, it might be attracting more than just birds. Water in birdbaths can easily become stagnant if there is not much activity, which can lead to an increase in mosquitoes on your property. To prevent this from happening, try to empty and change out the water in your birdbath at least once a week.

Get Rid of Yard Debris

If you have any debris around your yard, you might be unknowingly inviting mosquitoes to your home. Things like leaf piles, grass clippings, compost piles, or even thick vegetation can make for the perfect places for mosquitoes to live. Make sure to get rid of any debris like this that is near your home in order to keep mosquitoes at bay.
