5 Tips to Eliminate Mosquitoes After a Storm

Mosquito Authority Director of Pest Joe Malinowski lent his industry knowledge to L’Observateur to talk about the best ways to eliminate mosquito breeding habitats after a storm.

With the southeast part of the US getting crushed by rainstorms, hurricanes, and more, mosquitoes and other pests have been having a field day.

Standing water is the biggest breeding habitat for mosquitoes so when storms like the ones we have had this year roll in mosquitoes are quick to find any standing water and start breeding!

This makes clean-up a nuisance but also can create a dangerous environment in your yard for your family due to the several dangerous diseases mosquitoes can carry.

Here is a brief excerpt from the article:

Hurricanes, torrential rains and flooding across the Southeast and East Coast this summer brought more than property damage and power outages. With storms and continued heat come the lingering hazards posed by mosquitoes.

Standing water, overgrown grass, downed trees and numerous yard items are some of the places that create a breeding ground for these insects whose bite can transmit to humans such diseases as the West Nile and Zika viruses. These are dangers some people don’t think about when preparing for storms or picking up debris afterwards, so it’s important to know how to protect areas where mosquitoes can gather, says Joe Malinowski (www.mosquito-authority.com), director of pest management for Mosquito Authority® and Pest Authority®.

Joe says these are the five things you must do after a storm to ensure your yard doesn’t become overrun by mosquitoes:

  • Turn over all items that may be holding water.

  • Toss all “yard trash” which includes grass clippings, branches, and other debris.

  • Tarps. Make sure all tarps are shed of water and pulled tightly.

  • Take care of your home maintenance, including keeping gutters clean and clear.

  • Team up with your neighbors to ensure everyone helps keep the neighborhood mosquito-free.
